Personal Passion Project
Goal: To consume and create materials that explore the interest that you have chosen.
Product: A website with materials that explores the interest that you have chosen.
Details: The content, structure, and direction your website takes will be decided, mostly, by you. You will have some “required pieces” (written responses to prompts, “parts” or “pages” of your website dedicated to research and multimedia, etc.), but, in large part, what you choose to include will be your choice. The aim of this project is to have you learn efficiently, think critically, and communicate effectively. I will suggest types of technology, literature, and collaboration you might use to learn, think, and communicate; but you will have to find the ways that technology, literature, and collaboration are most useful to your project.
Process: 1) Identify the interest you would like to explore and the interests and skills you have that might help you create an engaging and informative website. 2) Explore different technologies and literature to see what technologies and literature might help you learn about your interest and help you create an engaging and informative website. 3) Integrate what you have learned to create your website.
Sources: You will find readings and multimedia that will help you learn about your interest. I will be a resource for you, but I encourage you to talk about your project with other people and to use the library and the Internet to learn about the interest you have chosen to address. Throughout this process, continue to “think outside the box.”
Evaluation: This is a long-term project; your work will be evaluated regularly and randomly. The following are some—but not all—of the categories in which you will be evaluated: 1) Effort: following directions and use of time when working in class and outside of class on this project, and how “professional” your work looks. 2) Content: the depth of understanding you have of your topic and how you demonstrate and communicate that understanding. 3) Creativity: ways in which you create an engaging and informative website. 4) Process: written explanations of your intention and process.
