- Formal language refers to language that does not use colloquialisms, clichés, or slang, and it adheres to all of the rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage. (Formal language writing can include first and second person pronouns and contractions.)
- Informal language refers to language that does not need to adhere to the rules of formal language, grammar, punctuation, or usage.
